With over 30 years of experience, Maria has created bespoke handcrafted wedding cakes, with attention to detail, technique and skilled application. Each design is customised to reflect the individual personality of the bride & groom and their event style.

Maria personally creates beautiful and unique hand-made sugar and wafer paper flowers which are colour matched to the colours and style of your event.

 

All cakes are produced from the finest of ingredients. Maria offers a variety of delicious flavours and fillings to impress you and your guests that will tantalise your taste-buds.

As a little girl I was always at my mother’s side in the kitchen. She loved to cook and bake, and create beautiful dishes and sweets for family and friends. My brother and I loved watching her, waiting for a small piece of dough from which we could create our own biscuit designs, cupcakes or pizzas.

Cake decorating for me began with a basic class on creating a flower and four books on the subject! I had finished school and was working in an office, but creating and crafting was my true love and as I made cakes for the special occasions of family and friends, my passion for cake decorating grew.

There were orders for birthdays, engagements, 21st and finally, the honour of creating a wedding cake. An earlier floristry course also gave me the knowledge and skill to create sugar and wafer paper floral arrangements, perfect for special occasion cakes.

The busy days of young family life took over and it was harder to find time to decorate cakes, however, I relished the opportunity to create special cakes for my children’s birthdays. The passion was definitely still there and as my children grew and more time was on my side, Sweet Affection Cake Designs was born.

 

I enjoy experimenting with new recipes and flavour combinations because I believe my cakes must not only look good but taste delicious. My business is all about creating beautiful cakes from scratch (and other goodies) using recipes that I have tweaked again and re-tweaked along with quality ingredients.

Putting together a new design or a combination of techniques to create a particular look is what I love most with the most important addition of beautiful blooms.  I love tall tiers, covering them using the Lid & Panel method in either plain fondant, 50/50 with modelling chocolate or 50/50 with marshmallow fondant.  I constantly strive for originality in design and work to achieve my best. I love to work with clients, understanding the trust they place in me to create their special centre piece. I listen to their ideas, colour and style requirements and then design and create an original cake that will not only be a stunning centre-piece for their special occasion but will provide them with wonderful, warm memories for the years to come.
